Not enough travellers to and from the Science Park

No trams late in the evening and weekends for the time being

Students and employees from Utrecht University will have to take a bus to reach the Utrecht Science Park late in the evening and on weekends. On weekdays, the last tram to UU's campus leaves Utrecht Central Station at 9:43 pm and the last tram in the opposite direction leaves at 9:26 pm. Absolutely no trams will run during the weekend.

Organisations based in the Utrecht Science Park are complaining about the gaps in the timetable, stated the province in a press release (in Dutch only, Ed.). It is also common knowledge that many students living in the Utrecht Science Park would like to see trams running more often. Last but not least, several parties would like football supporters to reach Galgenwaard by tram on match days.

However, research reveals that, even with this demand, the number of travellers would be too small anyway. On weekends, only the equivalent of a quiet city bus line gets transported to and from the Science Park on average. Having the tram run late in the evening and on weekends would mean additional costs for maintenance and management: between three and seven hundred thousand euros a year. Besides, the tram stops wouldn't be safe enough for a mass of football supporters.
